For testing the hardness of hard rubber, acrylic glass, hard plastic materials etc.

The pocket-sized devices are primarily used for quick, portable hardness testing according to Shore D of hard rubber, acrylic glass, hard plastic materials, stiff thermoplastics, polystyrene, printing rollers, sheets of vinyl, Resopal, etc. In this hardness test method, a steel needle in the form of a point is pressed into the material to be tested. The magnitude of the penetration resistance is displayed on a scale. The method is standardised according to DIN 53505, ASTM D 2240. Part 20 and BS 903.
